Blushing occurs when the blood vessels dilate in the face, neck and often upper chest area. It feels like it suddenly comes on and the sufferer has no control over the situation.
If you suffer from blushing, it affects many areas of your life as there is always the lingering thought "What happens if I blush?". In many instances, outfits are carefully considered in to cover up as much of the neck and chest area. Make up is often applied to cover up any potential blushing that may arise.
The most intense problem though, is not the physical considerations, it is the psychological effect that blushing has on you. There is always a level of social anxiety underpinning blushing as you are very aware of how you may appear, what others may be thinking of you when you blush and this all has a huge impact on your level of self confidence and self esteem in those situations.
Many people who suffer from blushing have a fear of being put on the spot as it may trigger the blushing. Blushing may occur just at the thought of blushing - which is a very difficult situation as you are constantly thinking about "What happens if I blush" or "What happens if they notice if I am blushing".
Blushing is most intense in new or unfamiliar social situations. It is often associated with being embarrassed, but for someone who suffers with blushing, the situation need not be embarrassing for them to blush. Any social situation or intensity of emotion can trigger the blushing.
